What’s up Nation!
Basketball season is now in full swing across the country at all levels (I’m in the USA - we have international subscribers), and I have seen a lot of coaches online asking about practice plans and structure, specifically at the middle school level.
If you only have one hour in the gym (as some coaches have stated), every decision you make matters. The problem is not that coaches lack effort. It is that most practices try to cover too much and end up teaching very little.
I see it all the time. Players standing in lines. Coaches talking for five minutes at a time. Drills that look good but never show up in games.
A good 60-minute practice should feel simple, intentional, and active. Players should be moving, thinking, and competing for most of the session. When practice flows, development follows.
Here is exactly how I structure a one-hour practice to get the most out of every minute.
