Coach J's Go-To Drill to Kick Off 3v3 Session

What’s up, 3on3 Hoops Nation!

Every time we hit the gym, there’s one drill I always start with. It’s simple, it’s smooth, and it gets everyone locked in fast.

It’s called "Pass and Screen Opposite."

If you’re just getting your players into the flow of 3v3. It builds movement, spacing, and teamwork, all without over complicating things.

What this drill teaches

  • Spacing

  • How to read defenders

  • Footwork on the catch

  • Quick decision-making

How it works

You’ve got three players: A (top of the key), B (wing), and C (wing).

  1. Player A passes to Player B.

  2. Right after that pass, A sets a screen for Player C — on the opposite side.

  3. C uses that screen to get open and fill the spot.

  4. Keep the ball moving — pass, screen opposite, repeat.

  5. After about 3-5 passes, the player with the ball either attacks the rim or hits a one-dribble pull-up jumper.

Nice and clean.

Why I love it

  • Gets players used to moving without the ball

  • Builds habits around screening and cutting

  • Helps develop court awareness and timing

  • Feels just like a real 3v3 possession

Coach J’s Tip 💡

Once your players have the hang of the pattern, let 'em go live after that last pass. No more script.

Can they make the right read?

Drive it, pull up, or kick to the cutter?

That’s how we build real basketball IQ.

This drill is the perfect way to kick off practice or a 3v3 session. Gets the legs warm, minds sharp, and the team moving with purpose.
