How to Make Your Kid A More Assertive Player

What’s up Nation!

I was recently in a Facebook group where I parent made post about how their kid is not assertive while on the basketball court, and they asked for suggestions on how to solve that issue.

One of the biggest challenges young players face isn’t learning a crossover or perfecting their jump shot—it’s learning how to be assertive on the court. We’ve all seen it: a player has the skills, but they hesitate, second-guess themselves, or fade into the background.

That’s where 3on3 basketball changes the game.

In 3on3, there’s nowhere to hide. With fewer teammates on the floor, every player has to touch the ball, make decisions, and step into the moment. That constant involvement naturally builds confidence—and confidence leads to assertiveness.

How Does This Happen?

More Touches = More Confidence

In 5on5, some players might only get a handful of opportunities. In 3on3, you’re touching the ball multiple times every possession. The repetition gives players the freedom to try, fail, and try again—without worrying about being overlooked.

Decision-Making Under Pressure

With less structure and more space, 3on3 forces players to read the defense, make quick decisions, and take initiative. That repetition develops the instinct to act instead of waiting.

Encouraging a Voice

On a smaller team, communication becomes crucial. Players naturally speak up more, call for the ball, and direct traffic. Over time, that voice carries over into 5on5 games, where they feel more comfortable stepping up.

Building “Fearless Reps”

The more times a player drives into the paint, calls for a screen, or takes a shot in 3on3, the easier it gets. That fearless repetition conditions players to be proactive instead of reactive.

At the end of the day, assertiveness isn’t something you just “turn on.” It’s built rep by rep, and 3on3 provides the perfect environment for it.

So, if you’ve got players who struggle with hesitation, 3on3 might be the best training tool you’re not using enough.

🏁 Final Whistle

The truth is, assertive players don’t just show up. They’re developed. And if you want players who attack with confidence, communicate with purpose, and aren’t afraid to take the big shot, there’s no better training ground than 3on3.
